LAPD Radio Frequency Configuration

In 2004 LAPD realigned their dispatch frequencies, and for the first time in their 3/4 of a century on the radio, every patrol and traffic division can have its own dispatch frequency and RadioTelephone Operator ("RTO"), especially during busy hours, such as on Day and PM watches.

For over two decades, due to a shortage of available UHF frequencies, dispatch consoles, and RTOs, it was necessary for almost all divisions to be doubled up on each frequency.  New equipment and frequencies, more operators, and a second dispatch center have made this improvement possible.

The former "Division Simplex" (car-to-car) frequencies are now labelled as "Enhanced / Fallback," and are capable of being used in either simplex or repeater mode.  "Fallback" is designed for use in the event that the dispatch centers' access to the frequencies fails.  Each division station has the capability to receive and dispatch their calls locally.

Note that all divisions will ALWAYS operate on their assigned "base" (dispatch) frequency listed below.  Selected divisions (especially the four "traffic" divisions) will be patched together intermittently, depending on staffing, workoad, special events or even immediate circumstances and incidents.  The process is dynamic, in the sense that patching/unpatching can be done in any configuration deemed necessary, and at any time.   Officers (and listeners) won't have to change their frequency to continue hearing calls for their division, it's all handled at the dispatch centers.

All frequencies use "APCO P25" Digital modulation unless "Analog" is indicated.
